In a concerning development ahead of Ghana’s elections, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has seized a large cache of arms and ammunition at the Golden Jubilee Terminal at the Tema Port.
Customs officials flagged the container after it was mis-declared, a tactic used by smugglers in previous cases.
This is deeply worrying. The recurrence of such incidents during election cycles points to deliberate attempts to destabilize the peace. The authorities must act swiftly to trace those behind these shipments and ensure they face justice.Dr. Doke said.
This discovery, eerily similar to previous incidents in election years, has sparked fresh concerns about national security.
The impounded consignment, concealed in a 40-footer container, included 53 pistols, 74 magazines, 65 rounds of live ammunition, and a pistol holster.
Comparisons are being drawn to a 2021 seizure at the same location, where nine pistols, eight assault rifles, and 219 rounds of live ammunition were confiscated.
Reports of political clashes in recent months, including a peace walk that escalated into violence between NPP and NDC supporters in the Mambo Bay area, have added to fears of potential unrest.
With elections just 16 days away, security experts are calling for heightened vigilance at entry points and across the country.
In an interview with Alfred Ocansey on Ghana Tonight, Dr. Doke also highlighted the importance of stricter port controls, intelligence gathering, and the tracing of weapons through their serial numbers.
He called for comprehensive measures to retrieve illegal arms already in circulation, with support from agencies like the Small Arms Commission.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. In October 2020, a container described as carrying personal effects and household goods was found to be holding arms and ammunition.
These recurring incidents highlight the need for sustained efforts to curb illegal arms importation and strengthen security measures ahead of elections.
Authorities are continuing investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible for the latest seizure.
Meanwhile, citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
