The Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has attributed the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the December 7th general election to what he described as the government’s arrogance, poor governance and economic mismanagement.

Speaking during the opening of Parliament on December 16, 2024, Dr Forson declared that the election results were a clear indication that Ghanaians had revolted against a government that had shown insensitivity, greed and disrespect to the citizenry.

“The NPP has been punished for its obstinacy, impunity and the arrogance of power. Ghanaians have sent a resounding message that political leaders cannot take them for granted,” Dr Forson stated.

He further called on his party, the NDC, and the incoming government under President-elect John Dramani Mahama to take lessons from the NPP’s downfall. “May we never become like the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government,” he cautioned, urging his colleagues to prioritise integrity, accountability and people-centred policies.

Dr Forson emphasised that the incoming NDC government must govern differently by staying true to its promises and putting the interests of Ghanaians above political expediency.

“The time has come for us to do right by the people of Ghana at all times,” he noted.

The NDC, which made historic gains in the parliamentary elections by flipping over 50 seats from the NPP, now boasts a commanding majority in Parliament.

Dr Forson described the results as a “people’s revolution” against bad governance and urged introspection within the political class to prevent such a verdict from recurring.

As Parliament reconvenes for its final session, the Minority Leader reiterated the need for unity and collaboration while ensuring accountability in the nation’s governance.
