’I don’t go about asking people about their properties’ - Muntaka ’faces off’ with Afenyo-Markin

.
The vetting of the Minister of the Interior-designate, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, experienced a tense moment during a question-and-answer session between him and the Ranking Member of the Appointments Committee, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin.

Muntaka’s vetting process, which began smoothly with him answering questions posed by the committee members, quickly took a different turn due to Afenyo-Markin’s line of questioning.

Taking his turn, Afenyo-Markin asked Muntaka whether he was aware of any members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership who had acquired government lands.

“Honorable nominee, you have indicated to us truthfully and in all sincerity that you have acquired government land and to the extent that you acquired it rightfully and you have your lease. There is nothing wrong with it. May I know from you, still being honest with us, if you know some of your party members in the leadership of your party who have acquired government lands in Cantonments, Roman Ridge, Ridge, and Airport Residential Area? Do you know by chance,” he asked.

Muntaka who appeared miffed and ruffled by Afenyo-Markin’s line of questioning, sharply responded that he does not go around questioning his colleagues or probing their private matters, such as how they acquired their properties.

He responded negatively, adding that he had no idea whether members of the party had acquired state lands or not.

“Frankly speaking, I don’t go about asking people about their assets so if I visit the chair of the committee, who I've been in this house with and closely worked together with on so many things and I say ‘oh, you have a nice house’, how am I going to ask how he acquired the land. I just don’t know,” he said, causing everyone to laugh.

Meanwhile, Muntaka’s vetting process has been concluded.
