‘Kim Lars Bjokegren is a winner’ – GFA on Black Queens managerial appointment
.
The Swedish trainer was confirmed as the replacement for Nora Hauptle following the expiration of the latter's contract with Bjokegren signing a two-year deal.
His appointment comes at a good time with the women's senior national team set for preparations ahead of the rescheduled 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Asante Twum believes the Swede is the best 'fit' to continue the project at the Black Queens.
"After we lost Nora, we decided to search for a new coach. The decision of the Executive Council was to do headhunting. We went through the process of getting someone who is competent, capable and qualified to lead the team," he told Joy Sports.
"This is a project that we embarked on two years ago. Once we began that project we decided to move the team from different phases. The first was to put a winning squad together and then phase out players gradually. What we started was to get the team friendly matches then we began the WAFCON qualifiers and the Olympic Games qualifiers.
"Unfortunately, the Olympic Games qualifiers didn’t go as planned. We were eliminated by Zambia in the third round but against Namibia we qualified for the WAFCON something we couldn’t do in 2022 after we lost to Nigeria.
"There were deliberations and consultations. We contacted our reps in Europe; they made certain recommendations to the Football Association and then eventually we settled on Kim Lars. Kim Lars is a winner; he has won championships in Cyprus and Sweden…We believe that he has the right mentality and right mindset, he fits that particular project we are currently having with the Black Queens."
Bjokegren is expected to be in Ghana in coming weeks to have a first look of the environment and kickstart their WAFCON preparations.
The Black Queens are drawn in the same group with South Africa, Mali and Tanzania.
