Our electoral defeat was not spiritual - Former NPP MP disagrees with NPP General Secretary

.
Former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has disagreed with claims by the General Secretary of the party, Justin Frimpong Kodua that spiritual factors were responsible for the party's defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on United Television's (UTV) Mpu ne Mpu show, hosted by Yaa Konama on January 24, 2025, he emphasized that elections are determined by science, data, and strategy and not spirituality.

He pointed to several factors that he had previously highlighted both before and after the elections, which he believes contributed to the party’s loss.

“Our electoral defeat is not spiritual at all; there’s more to it,” he asserted.

He also addressed the party's election review committee, established following the defeat. While acknowledging the experience of committee chair Professor Mike Oquaye, Eugene Antwi expressed a preference for involving younger, more active senior members, such as Dan Botwe, Joe Ghartey, Samuel Atta Akyea, and O.B. Amoah.

He urged party members to cooperate with the committee and to provide truthful accounts during the review process. Additionally, he recommended that the committee engage with constituencies and communities to ensure a thorough and effective evaluation.

On the way forward for the NPP, Eugene Antwi called for urgent action in three key areas: reflection, rebuilding, and recapturing power in the 2028 general elections.

Hon. Eugene praised the NPP's decision to reflect on the 2024 defeat, referencing similar committees formed after previous elections, including one in 2008. He suggested that, in addition to self-introspection, the party should commission professional research to validate the findings of the Prof. Oquaye-led committee.

Eugene Antwi also proposed significant reforms within the NPP, advocating for the abolition of the delegates' system and allowing all card-carrying members to vote at all levels. This, he believes, would reduce conflicts and strengthen party unity.

He further suggested granting former MPs and government appointees voting rights in internal elections to foster a sense of belonging.

“As part of the rebuilding process, the party must ensure tolerance for all members, including those who express strong views,” he added.

While Hon. Eugene declined to disclose specific strategies for recapturing power in the 2028 elections, he hinted at a major rebranding effort. Reflecting on the party's electoral history, he noted that the 2024 results represented the NPP’s worst performance since 1996. He called for the removal of the current National Executives, stating that fresh, dynamic leadership would be crucial for victory in the next elections.

“We are talking about people who held positions in our party while in power and have now taken us to opposition, leaving us with 88 MPs and 41% of the popular vote,” he noted.

Eugene Boakye Antwi, known for his confidence, honesty, and courage, has a long history of service to the NPP, including roles as NPP-UK branch Secretary, two-term MP for Subin, and former Deputy Minister for Works and Housing.
