The former President of the National House of Chiefs, addressing a durbar held in honor of former President John Dramani Mahama as part of his thank-you tour of the Volta Region on Friday, January 24, 2025, recounted how he and the other chiefs were humiliated at the Presidency.
"I recall that in 2020, when Volta felt under siege from soldiers sent from Accra in the run-up to the election, a good number of us from the Volta Regional House of Chiefs came together and visited the then-President, Nana Akufo-Addo, to appeal for mercy on our people. Sadly, our minister [Archibald Letsa] was there, together with one of our own sons, John Peter Amewu. They denigrated us and embarrassed us as chiefs. We left extremely saddened," he recounted.
He continued: "For instance, it was alleged that I, Togbe, was going around the registration centers and interfering with the registration process, which was not true. It was also alleged that we, the chiefs, were all NDC supporters and that we typically import voters from Togo, hide them for weeks, and have them vote for the NDC. These were the accusations made against us right in our presence, and it was not palatable at all."
Togbe Afede XIV went on to commend former President Mahama for appointing James Gunu as the Volta Regional Minister.
"I just want to thank you for giving us someone who promises to be a very good regional minister, who, even before receiving this mandate, demonstrated a willingness to work with the people and in the interest of the people. We know he will not be like the one we just had," he said.
