EC destroys over 3.6 million recalled ballot papers in Eastern Region

.
The Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 burnt ballot papers which were earlier distributed to the Eastern Region. This follows a recall of the ballot papers after a single ballot paper was deemed to be defective.

All ballot papers for the 33 constituencies in the Region were recalled by the EC and destroyed on Tuesday.

Officials of the Electoral Commission, police officers and party agents were all present to witness the destruction of the ballot papers.

The recall of the ballot papers follows a tip off from the National Security to the Commission about a leakage of a defaced ballot paper for Presidential election in the Eastern Region from the printing house.

The commission was informed by the National Security that one single defaced ballot paper meant for the Presidential election for the Eastern Region had been taken out of the printing house.

The printing was undertaken by Rocheck Limited and supervised and observed by the National Investigation Bureau, the National Security as well as the agents of the political parties and EC staff
she said.

The EC at a press briefing on December 1, 2024 said for this reason it has since postponed the special voting for the Eastern Region and the Western Region.

EC says the ballot papers will be reprinted for the special voting to take place on Thursday, December 5.
