They are also required to present three sureties each with one being a police officer working within the district and not below the rank of a chief inspector working within the Winneba jurisdiction.
The case was heard in the absence of the candidate and her campaign coordinator.
The police prosecutor told the court that he did not know the whereabouts of the accused persons, although they are supposed to be in the custody of police.
Meanwhile, counsel for Louisa Buabeng, who was remanded by the Winneba Court has described the bail conditions as outrageous.
The two were remanded by the same court on Friday following their arrest by the Winneba Divisional Police Command for “unlawful possession of another person’s voters ID card”.
Today in court, police however failed to present the two accused persons causing a delay in hearing the matter. The police officer in charge of prosecution told the court that he did not know the whereabouts of the suspects since the investigative officer handling the matter was out of reach.
Even though counsels for the accused persons tried to pray the court to relook the surety aspect of the bail conditions, they were denied hearing by the judge.
Lead counsel of the accused persons, Jennifred Maurice Adjei who spoke to 3news.com after the court proceedings questioned the justice delivery system of the country.
He believes the judge’s decision is being influenced by some “unseen hands” and describe it as unfair to his client who has vested interests in the ongoing elections.
The counsel regards the bail terms as an attempt to “punish” his “client for resolving to contest in the elections”.
This offense they are being charged for is misdemeanor and attracts a penalty of GHC500.00 or a year imprisonment. So, I find it absurd that they are being bailed for GHC50,000 and to also present three sureties with one being a serving police officer with the rank not below a chief inspector. The complainant of this matter is the Winneba Divisional Police Command so how can we have an officer within this jurisdiction?He queried.
Supporters of the independent candidate have also expressed disappointment at the treatment meted out to their candidate. They have cited the police’s handling of the matter as unjust.
