Anti-LGBT bill: Ghanaians are not happy with you - Dr. Kokofu to President Mahama
.
In an interview on Peace FM, Dr. Kokofu highlighted the dissatisfaction among citizens regarding the delay in signing the bill, which was promised during the campaign.
"If no one will tell you, I will tell you. The citizens are not happy with you. During the campaign, you said you would sign the bill immediately you come to the office. Now you are saying your government is taking steps. We are begging you, do this within your first 120 days in office. Ghanaians need you to sign the bill," Dr. Kokofu stated.
He emphasized that Ghanaians have approached him to convey their urgent request for the bill to be signed without compromise.
Dr. Kokofu reminded the president of his campaign promise to sign the bill as soon as possible and urged him to fast-track the process once parliament resumes.
"I understand that the parliament has been dissolved, so immediately parliament starts working, fast-track the bill and sign it," he added.
President Mahama has been under scrutiny over the controversial 'Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values' bill, which was passed by the 8th Parliament but faced delays due to lawsuits and was not signed into law before Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo left office.
During his campaign, Mahama promised that a future NDC government would sign the bill depending on its contents and specifics.
However, his recent comments during a meeting with Catholic bishops on January 14, 2025, suggested a shift. President Mahama highlighted the legal and procedural challenges faced by the initial bill, noting that it had expired with the previous Parliament.
He proposed a government-sponsored LGBTQ+ bill to integrate cultural values into school curricula rather than a private members' bill.
