Election deaths were investigated during NPP’s tenure – Assafuah

.
Ekow Vincent Assafuah has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government took concrete steps to address the tragic deaths during the 2020 and 2024 elections.

The Member of Parliament for Old-Tafo revealed that the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) had opened investigations into the incidents following petitions from Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah.

Assafuah criticized former President John Dramani Mahama’s recent directive to the Inspector General of Police to investigate the fatalities, describing it as an unnecessary attempt to create the impression that no action had been taken during the NPP administration.

“The NPP government didn’t sweep these unfortunate deaths under the rug, as Mahama seems to suggest.

The records show that Ablakwa and Armah-Kofi Buah, both members of the National Democratic Congress, filed petitions, and CHRAJ initiated a thorough probe. So why is the NDC acting as though we ignored the matter entirely?” Assafuah questioned during in an interview on Oyerepa TV monitored by MyNewsGH.

He further argued that Mahama’s call for a renewed investigation appeared politically motivated, aimed at gaining public sympathy and portraying the NPP as neglectful.

“This is nothing but propaganda. Mahama wants to use these tragic incidents to score political points,” he said.

The lawmaker reiterated that while the fatalities were tragic, the NPP government did not turn a blind eye to them. He urged Ghanaians to assess the facts rather than be swayed by what he described as a “calculated political strategy.”
