Ahiafor threatens Afenyo-Markin with Privileges Committee over attack on Clerk
.
During a live-streamed outburst, Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused Gifty Jiagge-Gobah of being partisan. He repeated this accusation in several news conferences and interviews with the media.
She was working for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he claimed.
His comments reportedly sparked a fight among committee members, which led to the vetting process being stopped that day.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin responded to the chaos by ordering the Clerk to file a formal complaint with the police and suspending four MPs.
In an interview with PM Express on Monday, the Adaklu MP gave an update on the incident, calling Afenyo-Markin's attack on Jiagge-Gobah "very reckless, very needless, and uncalled for."
"A Member of Parliament cannot behave in that manner," the Akatsi South MP added, adding that the issue is far from resolved.
He disclosed that Mr. Afenyo-Markin's actions would be brought before the Privileges Committee, where he would be subject to harsh penalties if he does not accept the chance to apologize.
“Yes, he should join me in apologizing to the Clerk of the Committee. If he takes advantage of the opportunity, there will be no need to refer him to Privileges.
"If he fails to do so, then we will follow the rules, and whatever is applicable will be enforced,” Ahiafor stated in a report by myjoyonline.com.
Afenyo-Markin will have an opportunity to apologize and settle the issue amicably in the days ahead. The disciplinary procedure will start, though, if he declines.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has criticized Speaker Bagbin for acting autocratically by suspending three of its MPs, has demonstrated significant support for Afenyo-Markin despite the issue.
The party has called the action intolerable, claiming it weakens its position to hold the administration responsible.
