Akufo-Addo will not remain Bawumia’s boss after he served him for 16 years - Dr. Ayew Afriye

.
The Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, believes that former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer for the 2024 election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is now politically mature and capable of charting his own path in politics.

Dr. Ayew Afriye, who served as the Middle-Belt Campaign Coordinator for Dr. Bawumia's campaign, stated in an interview on the Oyerepa TV morning show that the former Vice President is no longer standing in anyone’s shadow.

When the show host suggested that former President Akufo-Addo would continue to be Dr. Bawumia's boss even after leaving office, the medical doctor-turned-politician retorted, "Really... really! What I want to say is that he [Bawumia] has served Akufo-Addo for the past 16 years. Now, it is over... it is over now."

The show host, Parker Wilson, further asked whether Dr. Bawumia was unhappy with ex-President Akufo-Addo because he believed he was punished in the election for Akufo-Addo's mistakes. In response, Dr. Ayew Afriye said, "As for punishment, Dr. Bawumia has been punished by the ills of government. The outcome of the election was a referendum on the leadership of the NPP government."

Dr. Bawumia had been Akufo-Addo's running mate in four elections, starting from the 2008 elections. After two unsuccessful attempts in 2008 and 2012, the NPP won the election in 2016, allowing Dr. Bawumia to serve as Vice President to President Akufo-Addo after being sworn in, in 2017.

Dr. Bawumia, the incumbent Vice President at the time, led the NPP to its heaviest defeat in the December 7, 2024, general election. It marked the party's worst performance since the start of the Fourth Republic in 1992.

The Electoral Commission, on December 9, declared John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the 2024 presidential election.

According to the results declared from 267 constituencies, excluding nine constituencies, Mahama polled 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast, defeating the current Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), his closest competitor in the 12-candidate presidential election.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61% of the valid votes cast.

Out of the 276 seats in Parliament, the NPP lost about 50 seats it previously held.
